Introduction

Following the pioneering work of J. Haemmerling, the artificial culture of unicellular giant cells of Dasycladales has uniquely been setup and maintained at the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Zellbiologie by H.G. Schweiger and S. Berger around 1960 in Wilhelmshaven and after 1977 in Ladenburg near Heidelberg.

With the progress of feasible sensor electronics and computing facilities a highly sophisticated laboratory for the study of the circadian rhythm for instance of the oxygen production of Acetabularia  was created and operated in Ladenburg (H.G. Schweiger,  S .Berger, D.  Mergenhagen,  H.G. Wallraff, H.  Broda, D. Wolff, J. Dirk, Berthel et al. ).

With the adaption of advanced spectral time-series software on a dedicated computer DEC_2020,  the accumulated and extended data until 1994 could fully be exploited . (L.von Lindern, S. Berger, D. Mergenhagen, J. Dirk, D. Wolff)

It was Peter Traub’s unfaltering support and the friendly instigation of Franz Halberg, that inspired the intention to present the Ladenburg data in this form.

This data collection owes credit to the effort of so many dedicated scientists and their able assistants, that proper recognition in this place is impossible.

The monograph on Dasycladales by S. Berger and M.J. Kaever will be a splendid companion for the inquiring reader.

In this first part the complete data set is presented in a fashion that allows consistent application of the same evaluation algorithms to all data. No specific association of the data with various experimental conditions and aims of research are intended at this instance.

As an example the data of the analysis of a single cell is detailed and the complete set of ca. 800 data plots is made displayable.

Each address corresponds to the first of 20 data set’s unique number, which is explained below.

For extended trials take the following test pages:

 page10dat, page10int , page10skg  which contain the data of A903311.

For corresponding downloads see Browser help

A unique number is assigned to each dataset: AXXYYZZ (xx year, yy week, zz system)

raw data                    Axxyyzz.dat             as recorded in system

pulse data                Axxyyzz.pls             times of intervention or change of condition

input data                 Axxyyzz.int              equispaced, interpolated raw data

spectral data            Axxyyzz.skg            spectral (minimum leakage search) data

plot data                    Axxyyzz.pcx            plot of interpolated raw data and spectral data

The algorithm of minimum leakage search is described in L.v.Lindern et al.  1994; where also a detailed discussion of the analysis of the cell A903806 is given. Its plot serves as a frontispiece to this homepage. A first guidance to access these data is given via Browser help.

browser help:

Standard browser is Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and

above with 600x800 or 768x1024 resolution.

Other browsers like Netscape or Opera may need additional adaption.

Make shure to have a backup of your present browser settings.

This page was tested under MS Windows 2000 Professional SR3.

Kodak-Imaging software as part of MS-Win2000 was used for plot display.

Cerious Software was applied for thumbsnail handling and display.

If your browser cannot display following images, try link  A903806  nethertheless

and consult  sample output lists. (Size of this page plus data is ca. 90 Mb)

Display of a single thumbsnail image

Test an example by mouse klick (left button) to the link A903806 indicated below. (Only the boxed area then is active, left mouse klick on indicated pointer displays plot, corresponding klicks to .int or .skg show data).

Return to last browser-window through browser back-arrow  in upper left part of the symbol tray if return arrow is active. If return arrow is not active, close window by klick on X in upper right edge of frame. link  A903806 .

Resulting display resp. data should essentially read as follows

A903608.pcx:

A903806.int:

A903806.skg

If these frames are ok with you, go to page10int or page10skg .

Look for A903608 for comparison with preceding testpages.

Only separate pages can momentarily been engaged for this purpose.

The content of plots and data files is discussed in DATA presentation. If a more elaborate adjustment of your browser settings seems unavoidable, some of the following notes may be helpful until a system-administrator can be contacted:

a)      For the beginning try to sustain annoying pop-up requests of your browser.

b)      Make screen adaptions f.i. to 100% or to fullscreen only locally.

c)      Engage only single and complete file downloads (see downloads).

d)      Check for interference with other graphics applications.

In addition lvlold@aol.com  would appreciate notification.

Aknowledgement:

This homepage was generated with the help of PC equipment which was made available from the MPI fuer Zellbiology, Ladenburg. Especially for the conversion and maintanance of the software for spectral analysis, which was developed for a DEC-2060/20, this equipment played and plays a crucial role. The Acetabularia icon on the frontispiece was derived from a photo taken by S. Berger.
